During my considerably long career as a critic, I cannot recall ever hearing a more beautiful Finnish lyric tenor voice. Miettola’s voice has brilliance, agility and height. His vocal technique is confident, phrasing stylized and musical lines elegant.

After his acclaimed debut in the Finnish National Opera as Novice in Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd in March 2022, lyric tenor Tuomas Miettola has quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after young opera singers in Finland. In 2024, he was honored with the inaugural Jorma Hynninen Art Prize.

His operatic roles on stage includes Tamino in Mozart's The Magic Flute (Oulu City Theater), Gastone in Verdi’s La Traviata (Tampere Opera) and on the Sibelius Academy Opera’s stage Fritz in Mascagni’s L’amico Fritz, Albert Herring in Britten’s Albert Herring, Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte and Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia.

In 2023, Miettola received 2nd Prize and the Audience's Favourite Prize in the Havets Röst Singing Competition. He has also been recognized as a scholar of both the Finnish Wagner Association and the "Friends of Salzburg Music Festival" Association in 2022.

Elektra mourns her father’s death and longs for revenge against his murderers – her own mother and her lover. To fulfill her plan, Elektra needs the help of her sister and brother, whose return she awaits every day. The arrival of two strangers at the palace sets off a chain of terrible events. Will Elektra get her vengeance?

Based on the ancient tragedy, this opera is a horrifying portrayal of family, trauma, revenge, and the longing for love. Richard Strauss (1864–1949) composed the music for this blood-soaked tale. The score is as mesmerising in its harmonic beauty as it is devastating in its intensity, demanding the largest opera orchestra. Elektra was a sensation as soon as it was first performed in 1909, and its combination of brutality and sensitivity remains unmatched today.

Returning to the Finnish National Opera, this critically acclaimed production keeps the audience in its grip from start to finish. Performed without an interval, this 1 hour and 45-minute opera builds tension and passion without respite.

If you long for a full-blooded opera classic, La Traviata is the perfect choice. The intimate story of love torn apart by illness is immortalised in Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) masterful music, which never fails to stir the heart. This intoxicatingly beautiful production by the Finnish National Opera echoes the very finest traditions of opera.

La Traviata is based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias (1848), which itself was inspired by a true story. Over the years, it has been adapted into plays, ballets, films, and even the musical Moulin Rouge! To this day, visitors in Paris lay flowers at the grave of the real-life heroine.

Luonnotar

Luonnotar is based on Elias Lönnrot’s Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. Jean Sibelius adapted the lyrics himself from its original verses. The piece tells the creation story of the world: a mythical bird lays an egg on Luonnotar’s knee, from which the moon, sky, and stars are born.

Iolanta

Princess Iolanta has been blind since birth, but her father, King René, has forbidden anyone from telling her. She lives in a beautiful, walled garden on the king’s estate, shielded from the outside world and cared for by Bertrand and Martha. Iolanta is betrothed to Duke Robert, who, like everyone else, is prohibited from revealing her blindness.
